Reducing Plastic Use

Over the last few years I have slowly changed the way we have done things to make us healthier. We have gradually increased our activities so we are more active and getting in more consistent exercise. We changed our food habits to more positive ones, cutting out unhealthy food choices and eventually buying more and more organic items. The next thing on my list was cutting out using plastics with our food. The first thing I did was stop heating up our food in plastic containers in the microwave. When plastic is heated, the chemicals are leached into our food. That was an easy one to change! Now I’ve read all about how we should not be using the microwave and that totally makes sense! But since I don’t use it that much, I’m not quite ready to ditch it completely…maybe soon though! One thing at a time- that’s my rule! Cutting our plastic use with our foods has been one of those things I have been working on. I stopped using plastic plates and cups for the kids last year. We all drink out of Mason Jars now!

I love the 16oz wide mouth jars, and the kids use 8 oz mason jars to drink out of. They are sturdy, easy for them to hold since they have the weave pattern on them… Not to mention its the southern thing to do! I love mason Jars!

Here is a handy tip: Add a metal shaker ball & a lid to make your own shaker for quick protein shakes! I even scrambled eggs in it the other morning!

I love these cool colored ones! I found the blue mason jars ones first and then my friend Marge messaged me while I was on our road trip saying she found the purple ones. I of course asked her to order me a case! THEN today I found green ones! I’ll need to wait till we make our final move out to CA because I have more then enough right now!…. mmm can you really have too many mason jars? lol!

I finally broke down and got all the kids some Planet Lunch Boxes! They are an BIG investment and I just couldn’t bring myself to take the plunge last year. After realizing I was going to be wasting MORE money on plastic divided boxes that I just wasn’t happy with, that would break or would get yucky, I finally decided to order them for the start of school.

The kids were really excited about their new lunch boxes when they came in the mail!

I let them choose which magnet they wanted to use to decorate them. I got the complete set with magnets, the ice pack (all water no chemicals!) and some extra silicone squares to help separate food if needed.

I carry water around with me all day. Last year I had tried switching to a glass water bottle but it was so heavy! I hated lugging it around, so I went back to my regular plastic one. I really wanted to find a stainless steal one. I had switched the kids to stainless steal Thermos, so I wanted something similar but just couldn’t find something I liked in till I came across a water bottle at the Young Living Convention. It was sold by Life Science Publishing at their booth. It was stainless steal and it had an Alkaline water filer built into the bottle! I also fell in LOVE with the shirts the staff were wearing, so I had to pick up a few!

I bought one and fell in love with it so I went back the next day to get one for my husband but they were all out!( They said it would be a few months to get more in stock too! I decided to check out Amazon and see if they had something similar and they did, but it was a stick that you put into your own water bottle.

I threw that in my cart, but needed another stainless steel one, one that would be a bit bigger then the other one I just picked up. Luckily I found this one on Amazon! Its an Avion Bottle and holds 17oz.

I’m kind of picky about the mouth opening! I don’t want ice hitting me in the mouth when I drink it, so a big opening is out. I didn’t want a straw or any plastic to clean on it, so when I found this one I knew it would be perfect! Plus the opening is wide enough to put ice cubs in to keep it extra cold. One other thing I didn’t like about my plastic or glass bottle was it sweated and would get my purse wet when I dropped it in. This one has a double wall to keep the liquid cold (or hot!) and the outside is room temp! Its so weird picking up a warm bottle and getting ice cold water from it! So cool! lol They come in different FUN colors too! My favorite color is teal like the ocean, it reminds me of Hawaii!

Morning Muffins to Protein Morning Muffins

My kids love it when I make muffins on the weekends, I had fond memories of making breakfast with my dad as I was always the early riser in our house. He used to pop me up on the counter so I could help stir the batter (mostly for pancakes) and help him flip once I got old enough. So I enjoy having my kids help me too, I hope they cherish these moments as they get older!

I usually make blueberry muffins but my kids scarfed them all down already and I had no frozen back up! I decided to make a Spice Muffin instead, using some Essential Oils to flavor them. One thing I dislike about muffins or pancakes is that it’s low in protein. If my kids don’t get a good protein in at meals they are hungry in a hour and digging in the pantry! I didn’t want to cook eggs as well so I decided to try and add my new protein powder I got a few weeks ago.

I followed the recipe on back of box for the muffins. I adjusted it by adding 2 drops of each essential oil: Cinnamon Bark, Clove, Ginger, Nutmeg. I then added 4 scoops of Young Livings Pure Protein Complete to the batter and an additional 1/2 cup of no sugar added Almond Milk. That added an additional 50g of protein to the mix! Score! Now my balance of carbs was lower then my protein so they can officially be called Protein Morning Muffins!

Now I was taking a huge leap of faith, since I’ve never tried this before! I hoping 1. It would bake up ok 2. It would taste good!

Thankfully it baked up great at the original recommend baking time of 22 mins!

Now the real challenge: The Kid taste test!

SUCCESS!!!

I have plenty to seave for breakfast the next few days so school mornings will be much easier!

First Day of School

image

We had an AMAZING summer, so I have mixed emotions about them going back to school! Part of me wants to stay on the road, I could easily live in an RV and drive around the country exploring with my kids! Unfortunatlly my kids do better with me not teaching them, so back to school it is!

This is Keanu’s second year at the school, the school starts at PK3, but last year I had to pick him up before lunch. He used to get mad at me for picking him up, he wanted to stay with his brother and eat lunch! So I am very excited for him to stay the whole day! I will not be living in my car either, I can’t tell you how draining it is driving back and forth 3 times in one day!

I have heard so many mom’s lately telling me how they cry on the first day of school and how emotional it is for them, but for me I feel proud and excited for them! I love seeing them grow and learn and come back with 100 facts about snakes, fish, reading 4 books a week, diving into an art project. I’m excited to see Keanu’s growth with letter and number recognition, he wants to read so bad like his brother! Kai really worked hard on reading this summer, its been amazing seeing him read everything around us, especially traveling. I think it added so much value to our trip for him!

We had a pretty easy morning getting up and out the door, frankly I’m shocked I wasn’t a frazzled yelling mom, but I prepped well for an easy morning… and put Stress Away on everyone when they woke up! I hate being stressed out and even more I hate yelling at my kids, so I TRY and plan things accordingly. I find if I’m not doing something when I’m trying to rushing them out the door, it’s better. I can help them, which in turns help us all! So I tried to do as much as possible yesterday. I packed their bags with the school supplies I received from Amazon, I made their lunches, all the clothes were washed and put away and they had their showers last night. This morning, I had to get myself ready, so I got up at 5 to get a shower and dressed, then I put out some breakfast & their vitamins, before I got them up. They were so quick to get up, dressed and ate breakfast, they got about 30 mins of TV time before we had to leave at 7 am. I was expecting a ton of traffic this morning, but I was to the school in 10 mins so we had some time to kill in the car! I seriously felt like I was in the twilight zone with the lack of traffic! I had an appointment across town and it only took me 20 mins, when I was planing on 45!

This morning Keanu was so excited to see his Vans glow in the dark! “Mom, Mom! My Shoes! Look they GLOWING!”

Back to School: School Shopping

image

I was about to head out this morning to do our back to school shopping. I had the three lists printed out, I was frantically trying to get the kids up and going but they just were not having it this morning! Keao was the only one ready and willing to go shopping, which is so rare for her! Keanu slept the latest but still woke up a grumpy monster! He got some Stress Away rubbed on him and laid down for a bit! Kai got dressed, barley ate and then came to me crying as he was trying to brush his teeth. His lymph node in his jaw/neck area was swollen and painful. This is nothing new, anytime his body starts fighting something off, that is the first thing to swell up! We quickly did our home remedie treatment using essential oils. As I was rubbing some on his neck he asked if we could just stay home today. At that point I was completely on board with that idea but knew Keao would be disappointed that she couldn’t get her school supplies. I quickly thought and said to her “Hey! You want to grab my computer and shop on Amazon for your school supplies?” She got excited and said “Can I search for Pokemon folder?” Sure what ever floats your boat right now! I thought… haha crises adverted! Thanks Amazon!
